We believe the path to true success begins with hiring qualified men and women who will thrive in our culture. We have cultivated an environment that allows us to attract and maintain loyal team members, some who have been with our family of companies for 30 years or longer. In our “3-for-30” series, we gain better insight into those who have contributed so greatly to our success.
This month, we hear from Danny Sexton, a long-time member of our field mechanic team, whose talents and wit are sure to repair just about any piece of equipment you send his way.

How long have you been with the company?

What are your day-to-day responsibilities?
“Well, I come into the safety meeting first thing [in the morning]. Then, I go to the shop yard or the field and start [repairs] on the paving equipment or Memphis Stone and Gravel sites. Anything and everything that moves, I’m working on. I service asphalt equipment and gravel equipment, I’m flexible and I’ve been doing that a long time. For mechanics, there’s always something broken and something to do.”
What led you to the company and can you share your career path since joining?
“A job opening came up here and I applied in 1988. At the time, I was driving for a contractor, hauling asphalt and materials for Lehman-Roberts.” Danny went on to share, “I started out driving trucks for three years. Then, I worked in the [maintenance] shop for about eight years and was a lowboy operator at the time. Next, I was shop manager in Batesville for about five years. Then, I went from shop to field service, and I’ve been here ever since.”
What is your favorite part about working at our family of companies?
“Joking with my co-workers every morning. I love the people that are here. This company is a good company to work for and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
How have the company’s core values inspired passion in what you do?
“I’ve always been a friendly guy. I’ve tried to respect everyone and get along with everyone, and I expect the same for me. The equipment that the company has supplied us with is awesome. I’ve worked on a lot of old equipment before now. Leadership and stewardship – it’s all good. I plan on staying here until I retire.”
What is the best piece of advice you have received during your career, and do you have any wisdom to share?
“A lot of the older guys taught me over the years. Think about what you’re doing and put your mind to work. If you have any doubt that it’s not safe, don’t do it, and I keep that in mind every day.” He went on to add, “Stay strong. Stay safe. Stay focused.”
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
“I have my own shop at home and build antique cars and trucks. I’ve also drummed professionally for 35 years, play guitar, a little piano and I also sing. I spend the rest of my time with my grandkids.”
